Location and Nearby Attractions

Construction on the Marriott Marquis Houston first began in April 2014 and opened its doors to guests on December 26, 2016. One of the main draws of staying at this Marriott hotel is the prime location in Downtown Houston and close proximity to iconic landmarks.

Discovery Green Park

Across the street from the hotel is Discovery Green, a 12-acre park featuring lots of green land to run and play. Juxtaposed by the surrounding urban architecture, Discovery Green is filled with lush gardens designed to attract birds and butterflies. The park is also known to host fitness classes and the occasional concert. During the wintertime, you will also find an ice skating rink.

George R. Brown Convention Center

George R. Brown Convention Center is a massive facility used to host conferences, trade shows, expos, conventions, corporate events, and more. The 1.8 million sq ft convention center is connected to the Marriott Marquis Houston by a sky bridge, making the hotel a particularly popular spot for people traveling for work.

Minute Maid Park

Just a couple blocks from the Marquis is the iconic Minute Maid Park. First opened in 2000 under a different name, this stadium serves as home to the famous Major League Baseball team, the Houston Astros. In addition to world-class baseball playing, this park boasts delicious snacks and drinks and a retractable roof. Don’t forget your sunscreen if the sun is out!

Toyota Center

A couple blocks down in the opposite direction is the opulent Toyota Center. Home to the basketball team, the Houston Rockets, this arena allows about 18,000 guests to watch NBA  games. The Toyota Center is also used for concerts and has hosted superstars like Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Elton John.

Buffalo Bayou Park

Buffalo Bayou Park is about a 10-minute drive from the hotel. The dog-friendly 160-acre space is a public area for visitors and furry friends of all ages to let off some steam. Features of the park include gardens, a nature play area for kids, lakes, fountains, hiking and biking trails, and public art installations. At night, you can see the Waugh Drive Bat Colony.

Downtown Houston Aquarium

The Downtown Houston Aquarium is an impressive aquatic facility that houses over 200 species in over 500,000 gallons of water. Along with the marine life on display, popular attractions include the Ferris wheel, a train ride through a shark tunnel, stingray feeding, and an under-water themed restaurant. The aquarium is located about 10 minutes from the Marquis.

What Area of Houston Should I Stay In?

As the saying goes, everything is bigger in Texas, including Houston! Though Houston is just one city, it is the largest in the state and the fourth largest in the USA, spanning about 640 square miles. So, what is the perfect area of Houston for you to visit?

Downtown Houston is a prime choice for first-time visitors due to the vibrant, welcoming environment and easily accessible attractions. This area is designed to be walkable, so there will be ample shopping, dining, and cafe options wherever you choose to stay.

Downtown Houston is nestled right in the heart of Houston, providing excellent connectivity to the rest of the city and all surrounding locations. It is a great spot with good vibes for anyone hoping to explore.

If bustling, urban city life is not for you, a potential alternative could be Northwest Houston. Unlike the downtown area, Northwest Houston is in large part suburbian. You’ll likely find many cozy cafes and eateries, tranquil spa retreats, and beautiful golf courses.

The area is also home to Cypress Creek Park, Bear Creek Park, and Blackhorse Ranch. Whether you’d like to go for a hike, do some bird watching, or enjoy a picnic, all three spots are optimal locations for reconnecting with nature and wildlife.

Northwest Houston provides visitors with a relaxing retreat of peace and quiet while still being just 30 minutes away from all the action and urban amenities in Downtown Houston. In other words, you will have the chance to enjoy the best of both worlds!
