All you really need is a clear evening and a little curiosity. From your lounge chair by the pool, you can spot constellations, bright planets, shooting stars, and the moon without leaving the property.

Whether you’re hanging out at home, traveling to the snowy mountains, relaxing at a sunny beach resort, or staying in a quiet countryside cabin, taking a little time to look up at the stars can make your trip even more memorable. Even if you’re just sitting outside after dinner or relaxing on a lounge chair by the pool, studying the stars is an easy way to slow down and connect with nature.

What is astronomy?

Astronomy is simply the study of everything beyond Earth, including the moon, the sun, the planets, the stars, and the galaxies that make up the universe. Professional astronomers use observatories and space probes, but you don’t need any of that. Beginner astronomers can enjoy discovering a lot using just their own eyes, simple binoculars, or a beginner telescope right from the pool deck.

Why astronomy is worth exploring

People have used the night sky as a guide for thousands of years: for navigation, for marking the seasons, for storytelling. It’s one of the few things that hasn’t changed much, even as everything else has. But it never stands still: The sky shifts throughout the year, planets move, meteor showers come and go, and the moon runs through its phases. There’s always something slightly different to notice.

Getting started is easier than you think

You don’t need to invest in equipment to enjoy astronomy. If you want to bring a few things along for poolside stargazing, though, these are worth packing:

Binoculars, for a closer look at the moon and brighter objects

A star map or a stargazing app

A red-light flashlight, which keeps your eyes adjusted to the dark

A notebook, if you like keeping track of what you spot

A comfortable chair, so you can stay a while

A beginner telescope, if you want to go a step further

None of it takes up much room in a suitcase, and any one of these can make an evening by the pool a little more interesting.

Begin with the moon

The moon is the easiest target for anyone getting into stargazing: it’s bright, it’s unmistakable, and it changes just enough night to night to keep things interesting. With a pair of binoculars, you’ll start to make out craters, mountain ranges, and the darker, flatter plains across its surface.

Learn to recognize constellations

Constellations are essentially a connect-the-dots picture in the sky, and you don’t need to memorize dozens to get something out of it. A handful of well-known ones can be plenty to start with:

Orion

Ursa Major (home to the Big Dipper)

Cassiopeia

Cygnus

Scorpius

Once you can find these, the rest of the sky starts to make a lot more sense.

Orion the Hunter

Look beyond the stars

There’s more up there than stars alone. Depending on the season and your location, you may be able to spot several planets with the naked eye. Venus is usually the brightest object near sunrise or sunset. Jupiter and Saturn are easy to pick out once you know where to look, and Mars has a distinct reddish glow. A free stargazing app can point you toward exactly what’s overhead on any given night.

Watch for special sky events

Throughout the year, the sky puts on a few standout shows worth planning around:

Meteor showers

Full moons

Lunar eclipses

Planetary alignments

Occasional comets

Seasonal constellations

Timing a trip around one of these can make for a great story later, though honestly, even an average clear night has plenty to offer.

Tips for better stargazing

Give your eyes about 20 to 30 minutes to adjust to the dark.

Avoid looking at bright phone screens whenever possible.

Find an area by the pool with a nice, open view of the sky.

Try to observe away from bright resort lights or streetlights.

Check the weather forecast before heading outside.

Share astronomy with others

Stargazing is one of those rare activities that works for everyone at once. It’s a nice way for a group to slow down together, swap a few facts about the planets, and just be outdoors without much of an agenda. Since everyone’s looking at the same sky, it tends to spark conversation without much effort.

The sky is always waiting

One of the best things about astronomy is that it can be enjoyed almost anywhere.
