A therapist chooses pressure and movement based on what a client needs and what the session is meant to accomplish: relaxation, pain relief, recovery from an injury, or something else entirely.

Massage therapy also has its own vocabulary, and understanding even a handful of these terms can turn a passive experience into one where you actually know what’s happening and why. Terms like “prone position” or “effleurage” describe real choices a therapist makes moment to moment, often adjusting based on how your body responds.

It’s also worth knowing that training requirements, permitted techniques, and even professional titles for massage therapists vary depending on where you are. If you’re curious, it’s completely reasonable to ask your therapist about their training and credentials; most are happy to talk about it.

Ready to book?

Find a day pass near you

Access hotel pools, spas, and resort amenities by the day. It developed from traditional East Asian practices and uses many of the same points associated with acupuncture, but it does not involve needles.

Aromatherapy massage: Massage that incorporates diluted essential oils selected for their scent or intended effect. Therapists should ask about allergies, sensitivities, medications, and client preferences before applying essential oils to the skin.

Body mechanics: The way a massage therapist positions and moves the body while working. Good body mechanics use balanced posture, body weight, and efficient movement to reduce unnecessary strain on the therapist’s hands, wrists, shoulders, and back.

Chair massage: A massage performed while the client remains clothed and sits in a specially designed chair. In the context of massage therapy, the massage is performed by a licensed provider, and sessions are usually shorter than table massages, commonly focusing on the back, shoulders, neck, arms, hands, and head.

Compression: Pressure applied directly into soft tissue without sliding across the skin. Therapists may apply compression with the hands, fists, or forearms, depending on the body area and the client’s comfort.

Contraindication: A condition or circumstance that makes massage inappropriate or requires the session to be modified. A general contraindication may prevent massage altogether, while a local contraindication applies only to a particular body area.

Craniosacral therapy: A gentle hands-on approach in which a practitioner uses light contact around the skull, spine, and sacrum. The approach is based on the idea that gentle touch around these areas may affect comfort and movement, although evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited.

Deep tissue massage: Massage that uses slow, deliberate techniques and firm pressure to work with deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. The term describes the depth and intention of the work rather than a requirement to use painful pressure.

Draping: The use of sheets, towels, or blankets to cover the parts of a client’s body that are not being massaged. Proper draping supports privacy, warmth, comfort, consent, and professional boundaries.

Effleurage: A smooth, gliding stroke commonly used in Swedish massage. Effleurage can spread lubricant, warm the tissues, introduce touch, connect other techniques, and help the therapist assess the area being worked.

Fascia: Connective tissue that surrounds, supports, and connects muscles and other structures throughout the body. Massage therapists often consider how tension or limited movement in fascia may affect comfort and mobility.

Friction: A focused technique that moves the skin and upper layers of tissue over the tissues beneath them. Friction may be applied in small circles, along tissue fibers, or across the direction of the fibers.

Hydrotherapy: The therapeutic use of water or water-based applications. Massage therapists may use warm towels, cold packs, alternating warm-and-cold treatments, baths, or other water-based methods when appropriate and within their training.

Indication: A condition, concern, or goal that suggests a massage technique may be suitable for a client. Indications are considered alongside the client’s goals, health history, current condition, preferences, and any contraindications.

Intake form: A document used to collect information before a massage session. It may include contact details, health history, medications, injuries, allergies, areas of concern, treatment goals, and emergency contact information.

Kinesiology: The study of human movement. Massage therapy students use kinesiology to learn how muscles, joints, and other structures work together during posture and movement.

Lubricant: A product applied to the skin to reduce friction during massage. Common examples include oils, creams, lotions, gels, and balms, each of which provides varying levels of glide and grip.

Manual lymphatic drainage: A specialized technique that uses light, rhythmic movements intended to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid. It requires specific training and should be modified or avoided when certain medical conditions are present.

Massage therapy: The professional use of hands-on techniques to work with muscles and other soft tissues. Depending on the therapist’s training and the client’s needs, a session may support relaxation, comfort, movement, or symptom management.

Modality: A particular system, style, or method used by a massage therapist. Swedish massage, sports massage, shiatsu, and myofascial release are examples of massage modalities.

Myofascial release: A hands-on approach that uses sustained pressure, stretching, or movement to work with fascia and areas that feel tight or restricted. The pressure may be gentle or firm, depending on the technique and the client’s comfort.

Neuromuscular therapy: A structured form of soft-tissue work that may address trigger points, muscle tension, posture, and discomfort that is felt away from its source. Practitioners often combine focused pressure with knowledge of anatomy and movement.

On-site massage: Massage delivered at a workplace, event, school, airport, or another location outside a traditional treatment room. The format varies by each spa location, but it is commonly offered as a short chair massage with the client remaining clothed.

Palpation: The use of touch to assess how body tissues feel, including their temperature, firmness, movement, and tenderness. Palpation helps therapists adjust their techniques while remaining within their scope of practice.

Passive movement: Therapist’s manipulation of the client’s body while the subject remains relaxed. Examples include gently moving a joint through part of its range of motion or positioning a limb for stretching.

Petrissage: A group of techniques that lift, squeeze, roll, or knead soft tissues. Petrissage is commonly used after effleurage in Swedish massage and can be adapted to different body areas.

Prone position: A position in which the client lies face down. Cushions, bolsters, and a face cradle may be used to support comfortable alignment and breathing.

Range of motion: The amount of movement available at a joint. Range of motion may be described as active when the client moves the joint independently, or passive when the therapist moves the joint.

Referred pain: Discomfort felt in an area other than where the irritation or tension originates. A client may experience symptoms distant from the tissue being assessed or treated.

Reflexology: A practice that applies pressure to mapped areas of the feet, hands, or ears. Reflexology traditions associate these areas with other parts of the body, although these traditional associations are not based on confirmed anatomical connections.

Rosen method: A form of bodywork that combines gentle touch, breathing awareness, movement, and verbal communication. Practitioners use the approach to help clients notice patterns of muscular tension and emotional response.

Scope of practice: The activities and techniques a massage therapist is educated, authorized, and legally permitted to perform. The scope of practice may be affected by state or local laws, professional standards, credentials, and the therapist’s level of training.

Shiatsu: A Japanese bodywork practice that applies rhythmic pressure with the fingers, thumbs, palms, and sometimes elbows or knees. Sessions may also include stretching and joint movement, often with the client clothed on a mat or padded surface.

SOAP notes: A common method for organizing client records. The letters stand for Subjective, Objective, Assessment, and Plan, which help the therapist document what the client reports, what the therapist observes, the therapist’s assessment, and the plan for future sessions.

Sports massage: Massage adapted to the needs of physically active clients. Techniques may vary depending on the sport, training schedule, activity level, recovery needs, and whether the session occurs before or after an event.

Supine position: A position in which the client lies face up. Bolsters and pillows may be placed under the knees, neck, or other areas to improve comfort and support.

Swedish massage: A massage system that commonly uses effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement, and vibration. Pressure, pace, and technique selection can be adjusted for relaxation or more focused therapeutic work.

Tapotement: A rhythmic percussion technique performed with alternating hands. Common forms include tapping, cupping, hacking, and beating, with the speed and force adjusted for the body area and purpose.

Therapeutic relationship: The professional, client-centered relationship between a massage therapist and a client. It depends on clear communication, consent, confidentiality, appropriate boundaries, and respect for the client’s right to modify or end a session.

Trigger point: A sensitive area within a muscle or related connective tissue that may be painful when pressed. A trigger point may cause discomfort at its location or refer pain to another area.

Trigger point therapy: A technique that applies focused pressure to sensitive or tense areas commonly called trigger points. Pressure should be adjusted according to the client’s response rather than continued if pain becomes sharp, intense, or worsening.

Vibration: A massage technique that uses rapid shaking or trembling movements. It may be produced manually or using suitable equipment, and can be applied at varying speeds and intensities.

These terms are a useful starting point for anyone who wants to get more out of their massage sessions, understand a recommendation from a doctor or physical therapist, or just satisfy their curiosity about the profession. Massage therapy students will go on to build much deeper knowledge through anatomy courses, supervised practice, and ethics instruction, but the basics belong to everyone who’s ever been on the table.

Additional resources

Massage Therapy: What You Need to Know

Beauty of Basic Massage Techniques

Non-Drug Pain Management

Introduction to Massage Techniques

Couples Massages in New York

Standards of Practice

Student and Faculty Tools

Myofascial Release Therapy

Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy Program Classification

Introduction to Massage Therapy Lab

Sources cited

American Massage Therapy Association.
